NEW RIBBON CONNECTOR
SLASHES ASSEMBLY COST

Unique insulation - displacement connector (IDC) connects in 10 seconds, terminates discrete wires or ribbon cables up to 40 wires directly into printed circuit board with no female connector, offers robust performance, low contact resistance.

Clarksville IN -- April 25, 2001 - Ranoda Electronics Inc here announces a new insulation displacement connector (IDC) for terminating discrete wires or multi-conductor ribbon cables. On the circuit board (bottom) side, it uses Ranoda's novel EECOM (`m) connector technology to eliminate the need for female receptacles, thus slashing the parts count and cost of labor and assembly time.

Ranoda's new EECOM - IDC connector uses a simple plastic assembly to terminate discrete wires and ribbon cables of up to 40 wires on 0.050 inch (1.27 mm) centers to printed circuit boards via plated thru-holes, without the need for a second, female connector part. This slashes parts-count and assembly-time costs for a wide variety of electronic products including home appliances, office equipment, industrial controls, telecommunications, automobiles and other electronic products.

On the top side, a simple hand tool terminates a ribbon cable to its connector in just 10 seconds. On the bottom side, Ranoda's Electrically Encircled Compression (EECOM) connector technology eliminates the need for a female connector. Only another 5 seconds is required for mating the entire assembly to its circuit board. This reduces the cost of connecting ribbon cable to a circuit board to just one low cost part and 15 seconds of labor.

In operation, the top side of the EECOM Insulation Displacement Connector uses a V-shaped knife contact to terminate the ribbon cable. The connection is made by terminating the ribbon cable to the IDC contact with either a hand tool or automated termination tool. The tool forces the wire into the wedge, displacing its insulation as it enters the gap. The wire strands force the jaws apart, thus making a secure connection on both sides of the wire, which is held captive by the IDC contact.

The benefit is there is no need for wire preparation.

The IDC connection is renewable and robust, withstanding mechanical shock up to 50 g in all three axes. Contact resistance is 10 milli-ohms or better. Contact voltage rating is 250 VAC minimum. Per-line current rating is 1 Ampere. Insulation resistance is specified at 500 Megohms minimum. Dielectric withstanding voltage is 1500 VAC for a minute. Contacts on both the top and the bottom are tin-lead plating over copper alloy. Mate-demate lifetime is rated at 500 cycles for the bottom EECOM pins.

PRICE AND DELIVERY:

Pricing for Ranoda's new EECOM - IDC connectors is based on quantity. Delivery is quoted at 2-3 weeks ARO.
